VIth World Melioidosis Congress 2010 Jupiters Hotel & Casino, Townsville Australia

Welcome to the VIth World Melioidosis Congress 2010

Welcome to the home page for the 6th World Melioidosis Congress to be held from 30 November -
3 December 2010 at the Jupiters Hotel and Casino, Townsville, Queensland, Australia. A pre-conference workshop will be held on 30 November.

This triennial congress is expected to bring together 250–300 scientists, doctors and students from all over the world to discuss several areas of research and treatment strategies that would benefit patients suffering from the disease. The key themes of the congress include epidemiology, the environment and melioidosis, clinical and laboratory diagnostics, immunology and vaccine development, biodefence, therapeutics.

We are celebrating the centenary of the first description of melioidosis by Alfred Whitmore and C.S. Krishnaswami and also marking the centenary of the establishment of the first Australian research institution devoted to tropical medicine. Hence the theme for the Congress - “Celebrating a Century of Research”. We invite you to attend the Congress in the spirit of the message embodied in the Congress logo created by a local Indigenous graphic artist. The large circle of the Logo represents a contemporary Indigenous symbol of a meeting place; the small dots that surround the larger circle represent people from around the world gathering together; the black lines represent the group reaching out to exchange knowledge and ideas.

Five reasons why you should attend the Congress:
  1. Attend a leading congress addressing recent developments in research and clinical aspects of melioidosis.
  2. Meet and discuss with national and international experts working on melioidosis regarding your research interests and possible collaborations.
  3. Network with colleagues from across Australia, South East Asia, Europe and North America.
  4. Gain recognition for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs.
  5. Visit Townsville; The very heart of life in the tropics, with the region extending north to captivating Mission Beach, south to the rustic Burdekin and west to historic Charters Towers. With an eclectic mix of rainforest, reef, sandy beaches, outback bush and city benefits, Townsville has something for everyone.
